Remus Lupin took his torn photographs from the envelope with a feeling of relief. For too long he had seen only betrayal when he looked at them, but now that was over.

Carefully he poured out the smaller pieces, and Sirius’s smiles suddenly covered the table. It must have been twelve years since he’d looked at these scraps, twelve years since he’d torn all evidence of Sirius’s existence from his pictures. He’d never known why he kept the tiny pieces, but now he was glad he had.

Remus spread out the fragments and began to glue a friendship back together.

At the start of each new school session, Severus always felt the same way. A lump in the back of the throat. Nervous sweat about the palms. Sleeplessness. A twisting sensation in his stomach.

His calm demeanor hid anxious emotions. Would there be teasing? Bullying? Would the work be beyond comprehension? Were there enough quills and parchment?

He felt the soft touch of a hand on his shoulder.

“Are you ready?” she asked. He nodded.

“The children are, too,” she comforted. “Honestly, they’ll be fine, just like last year.”

“I still worry,” Severus sighed. “I know the place all too well.”

Notes: I've been tied up with other projects, fandom and RL, but I wanted to get back in the swing of things. Apologies for the rust here! The title, of course, refers to Caligula: Let them hate me, provided that they fear me. Set during Severus' first day of teaching at Hogwarts.


It was characteristic of Severus' luck that his very first class should be filled with Seventh Years.

Seventh Years. Old to enough to know him. Old enough to remember.

Old enough to challenge.

They hadn't forgotten his name or reputation. They'd obviously recognised him at the Welcoming Feast, needling Severus with their scrutiny whilst trading whispers and sniggers.

Snivellus, their mocking glances said. They didn't fear him.

But they would.

He threw the classroom door open with a resounding crack, black robes billowing like an approaching storm, and the brats flinched.

Severus smirked. Challenge him they might—but they wouldn't succeed.

This week, Ravenclaw and Slytherin tie at 30, followed by Gryffindor at 20.

New Prompt: Stick. That might be something sticky, a literal stick, or a metaphorical threat of a consequence (e.g., the stick versus the carrot), or whatever else you come up with.

Hermione gazed thoughtfully at the man sat the other side of her desk. His hair, still greasy, was now streaked with grey. His robe had seen better days.

‘Are you sure you want to return to teaching, Mr Snape?’ she asked kindly, knowing that he had tried and failed to make it as an independent brewer.

‘Yes, Headmistress,’ Snape replied without any great enthusiasm. ‘I'd like to be considered for the Potions position, should it ever become vacant.’

Hermione sighed. ‘Unlikely, I’m afraid, in the foreseeable future. But... Would you be interested in teaching DADA?’

Above her, Albus Dumbledore choked.

“You can’t miss the opening feast.”

“They remember me as their tormenter.”

“They know the truth now; you did what you had to do to protect them and the school, and to help me. For Merlin’s sake, Snape! The Board offered you the Headmastership. That’s a pretty clear statement of their regard.”

“I never wanted it, especially after....Albus.”

“The DADA professor is respectfully requested to get his arse to the head table.”

“Minerva never said that.”

“Words to that effect.”

“Very well.” They climbed the stairs together.

Challenge #245: Back to School It's back-to-school time (in my hemisphere), so this week's challenge is to write a drabble focusing on Snape's return to school. You can take this to mean anything from Severus Snape's second day in Muggle school to his first day back at Hogwart's after recovering from Nagini's not-quite-lethal bite.

‘Quiet too. Startled me yesterday. I was looking at a book he had: Latin, if you please. Then, this morning, cursing in Latin. I can now only think he’s on loan from the Vatican. Talk about no-one expects . . .
‘Still, the esteemed Mr. Shacklebolt says he’s reliable, so that’s that.’

The crowd was huge, noisy, and surprisingly well organized. Snape's fear of being recognized dissipated as he watched group after group pass by.

A smallish, badly dressed man sidled up to him. "Severus? Is that you?"

Severus whirled, fully prepared to deny his identity until he found himself staring at Remus Lupin. "You?"

"I could say the same." Lupin was his usual calm, annoying self despite the "Yes, I'm Gay" t-shirt. "One never would have guessed."

A group of women on motorcycles drove by, tossing condoms into the crowd. "What about your Auror?"

"She's with the Lesbian Mamas," said Lupin.
